The Lancia Stratos HF (Type 829), more widely known as Lancia Stratos, is a mid-rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, sports and racing car, specifically for rallying, produced by the Italian marque Lancia, of which only 492 units were produced. The HF stands for "High Fidelity".

It triumphed in rallying in the 1970s and 1980s and was specially designed for this competition. It won the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975, 1976 consecutively,3 at the hands of Sandro Munari.

The inspiration for the development of the Lancia Stratos Zero Concept rally car was the prototype developed by Bertone for Lancia, which was shown to the public at the 1970 Turin Motor Show.4 The futuristic and radical design was the result of an intense effort in the wind tunnel to reduce the aerodynamic coefficient to the minimum possible,3 producing a car that looked more like something out of a science fiction movie than reality. In fact, the car was called Stratos because its appearance reminded one of the designers of something out of the stratosphere.

The car shown at the show was a prototype with a tubular monocoque, built using a combination of sheet metal in the center section, and fiberglass reinforced doors, front and rear pillars and bodywork.

The engine and rear suspension were mounted on a steel substructure. The low aerodynamic drag coefficient was achieved thanks to a very smooth exterior, with no ribs or curves to impede the flow of air, and a very angular nose with retractable headlights.

Lancia's sports manager at the time was Cesare Fiorio. His Lancia Fulvia team had been used with great success in rallying until 1966,4 but from that year to this part, they had lost prominence due to cars that competed with brands such as Porsche or Alpine-Renault. The Stratos design fired Fiorio's imagination. He imagined the prototype being turned into Lancia's new racing car. Fiorio never imagined that this dream would become one of the greatest racing cars of all time.

Until then, rallying had been dominated by competition cars, but taken on the basis of vehicles that existed on the assembly line for conventional customers. No one had ever before considered the idea of producing a vehicle exclusively for competition.

The rules of the World Rally Championship required a minimum of 500 units produced in order to homologate and admit a car into competition, although during the Stratos production period that number was reduced from 500 to 400 units.4 The FIA thought that such a high number of cars required for homologation could put off more than one manufacturer and that there might come a time when the championship would run out of participants, so they lowered the number.

The Stratos was the first car to take advantage of the new homologation which allowed at that time the championship to be monopolized in the future by the B Groups of the 80's, which were soon banned for being too fast and too dangerous cars.

Always keeping in mind the central position of the engine and, with a blank sheet of paper, without the added constraint of having to make a car to sell to the public, Fiorio began to redesign the Stratos to turn it from a prototype into a competition car, the first thing was to get a sufficiently powerful engine.
