The 2016 Formula 1 season was the 67th Formula 1 World Championship in history. In this season the winner of the drivers' world championship was Nico Rosberg and Mercedes AMG F1 Team won the constructors' title.

Changes in circuits

The start of the season was on March 18, it was pre-set to be on April 1, 15 days later than in previous seasons.

The Russian GP becomes the fourth race, joining the first part of the Asian tour of the calendar with the first part of the European tour.

The Malaysian GP moves from being the second race to the sixteenth, entering the second part of the Asian tour of the calendar.

The European GP returns after three seasons of absence, to be held at the Baku Street Circuit in Azerbaijan.

The German GP returns after being absent last season due to a failure to reach agreements. It will be held at the Hockenheimring.

There will be 21 races, a new record for Formula 1.

The preseason is reduced from three races to two.

Driver changes

Romain Grosjean left the Lotus team after four seasons and signed with Haas F1 Team for the 2016 season on a long-term contract.

Esteban Gutiérrez left Scuderia Ferrari as reserve driver and signed with Haas F1 Team for 2016.

Jolyon Palmer made his Formula 1 debut in 2016 with Renault Sport F1 Team.

Kevin Magnussen replaced Pastor Maldonado at Renault Sport F1 Team, due to defaults in payments from its main sponsor: PDVSA.

Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto made their Formula 1 debuts in 2016 for Manor Racing.3940

Stoffel Vandoorne replaced Fernando Alonso at the Bahrain Grand Prix due to his accident at the previous grand prix.

Max Verstappen and Daniil Kvyat swapped seats as of the Spanish Grand Prix. The Dutchman moved to Red Bull Racing and the Russian returned to Toro Rosso.

Esteban Ocon replaced Rio Haryanto as of the Belgian Grand Prix, due to non-payments from the Indonesian driver's sponsors.

Changes of teams

Renault bought the Lotus F1 Team, marking the return of the French brand after five years.

Haas F1 Team debuted, using Ferrari engines.

For this season, Marussia switched to Manor Racing and used Mercedes engines.

Tire changes

For this season Pirelli added its new fifth compound called ultrasoft, which can be used on certain street circuits.

Of the thirteen sets available for each Grand Prix, drivers will be able to choose how many sets of each type of compound to wear for each race.

Pirelli will select three different models of dry-floor tires for each event, from which drivers will be able to choose.

Engine changes

Red Bull continues to run Renault engines but not under their own name: in December 2015 it was confirmed that they will carry the name of their sponsor TAG Heuer.

This season Manor has Mercedes engines, which will be a big step forward considering that in 2015 they competed with 2014 Ferrari engines.

This season Toro Rosso is powered by Ferrari engines, with the 2015 specification.

Regulatory changes

Classification in eliminatory qualifying rounds

The qualifying system for the first and second race was changed to the following.

Duration: 16 minutes.

Elimination: From 7 minutes, the slowest drivers (every one and a half minutes, the one with the fastest time).

Qualifying: Of the 22 competitors, 15 will advance.

Duration: 15 minutes.

Elimination: From 6 minutes, the slowest drivers (every one and a half minutes, the one with the fastest time).

Qualifying: Of the 15 competitors, 8 will advance.

Duration: 14 minutes.

Elimination: From 5 minutes, the slowest drivers (every one and a half minutes, the one with the fastest time).

Qualifying: To be determined when the two remaining drivers define the pole position.

Qualifying in free qualifying runs

From the Chinese Grand Prix onwards, qualifying reverted to the system that had been in place during 2015, due to protests from drivers and team principals who were not comfortable with the new system.

Duration: 18 minutes.

Qualifying: Of the 22 competitors, 16 will advance.
