In road transport, an oversize load (or overweight load) is a load that exceeds the normal or customary legal size and/or weight limit of a truck for transport on a particular road, highway or other transport infrastructure, such as an air cargo, section or water cargo. In Europe, it may be called special transport or heavy and oversized transport.

The axle limits can be the load. A load that exceeds the axle limits, but not the total weight limits, is considered overweight. Examples of oversized/overweight loads include construction equipment (cranes, front-end loaders, backhoe loaders, etc.), prefabricated housing, containers, building components (bridge beams, generators, windmill propellers, rocket blades, industrial equipment).

Legal dimensions and weights vary from country to country and from country to country. A vehicle exceeding legal dimensions usually requires a special permit, which requires additional fees to allow an oversized/overweight vehicle to legally travel on the road. The permit usually specifies the route that the load must follow and the dates and times during which the load can travel.

When a load cannot be unloaded into units that can be transported without exceeding dimensional and/or mass limitations, it is classified as an abnormal load. The second definition can be summarised as follows: an abnormal indivisible load (AIL) is one that cannot be divided into two or more loads when transported (on roads). Bulk cargo is also used to define cargo that cannot be loaded into any sea container or is too large for air freight.

All road transport is defined in the CMR Convention (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road) , which relates to a number of legal issues, mainly concerning road transport of lorries by road.

Loading and securing of cargo

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,

Large Truck Crash Causation Study , 7% of US truck crashes are caused by improper load securement or load switching. Load shifting can cause the truck to become unstable or the load can fall off completely, leading to serious public safety problems.

Load shifting is prohibited by law, and the shipper, motor vehicle, driver, consignee and the manufacturer of the lashing device are responsible for ensuring that the load is fully secured.
