The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a sports car manufactured by the American company Ford in collaboration with the British company Cosworth. It is a sporty version of the Ford Escort#Fifth generation Ford Escort and was marketed between 1992 and 1996 in two different versions.1 It differs from other vehicles in the rest of the range thanks to its large rear spoiler. It has a Cosworth YBT engine, a 2.0L turbo engine that has 227 hp as standard. A total of 7145 units were manufactured.

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was created to replace the Ford Sierra Cosworth in the World Rally Championship under its highest category at the time, the Group A. The FIA established in the regulations the obligation to manufacture 2,500 road-going units of the vehicle to be able to register the car in the World Rally Championship as Group A.

Due to the great reception it had among the public more than 2500 vehicles were manufactured although there were some changes between the first units and the later ones, the most notable being the replacement of the original turbo for a smaller Garrett T25 turbo leaving the car with a power of 217 hp. The Escort RS Cosworth was designed at Ford's SVO facilities by Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler.

Competition

Ford Escort (group A)

The Ford Escort Cosworth was the first Ford Escort with four-wheel drive. It was homologated as Group A and competed in the world championship from 1993 to 1996 and lasted two more years in its World Rally Car version.

Its first official participation in the World Rally Championship was in the 1993 Monte Carlo Rally where it achieved a second and third place with the drivers François Delecour and Miki Biasion respectively being beaten only by the French Didier Auriol with his Toyota Celica.

Although it never won the world championship it was quite successful at national and European level winning several national championships and the European Rally Championship in 1994 at the hands of the Belgian driver Patrick Snijer.
