The first known record of cattle trains occurred around 1607 on the English ship Susan Constant, which carried Jamestown-bound settlers. 1800s

Chicago's meat exports had risen to nearly 10% by 1848. Supposedly the first shipment of live cattle to Chicago by rail was in 1867 on the Kansas Pacific Railroad. About twenty carloads of Texas-bred Longhorns left the Abilene rail yard in Kansas on the Kansas Pacific Railroad bound for the Chicago Stock Yards. 

This event changed the face of the cattle industry. Cattle from Texas were driven to the rail yards to be transported to large feeders, processors and packers. Cattle were carefully selected to minimize distance and maximize feed to maintain and fatten the herd. 

Cowboys were hired to collect, drive and hold cattle at major buying stations. Cowboys reported a fatality rate of about 3% due to the route. As railroads expanded, processors increased, and refrigeration technology improved, the refrigerator car was patented in 1867. 

The need to drive cattle ended and the cattle drive trail disappeared by 1889. Improvements in refrigerated transport created a market for dressed meat. The distribution of dressed meat exploded, slowly reducing the need to transport live cattle by rail and making it economically unviable.

20th century

In the early 20th century, the railways dominated the dressed meat market and the freight industry was in its infancy. By the mid-20th century, the refrigerated truck was developed for commercial trucking, and then processed meat was transported primarily by the trucking industry. The railroads had collapsed and could not provide as many options for transporting and receiving livestock and other livestock. Transporting live cattle by truck was much more economical, humane and offered more options for directing cattle to auctions, feeders and processors. The trucking industry helped create a connected road system throughout the United States.

2000s
